Marble slab pre-shipment inspection: what to check first and how much inspection is enough

A pre-shipment inspection should not give every marble slab the same checklist and the same inspection effort. First confirm that the slabs being inspected are the actual slabs or batch you approved. Then concentrate on the risks that matter for that particular marble: structural soundness, repairs, dimensions, finish, usable area, or visual consistency.

On a first order, material identity and traceability deserve more attention, because you do not yet know how reliably the supplier controls slab reservation, replacements, and production records. For a fragile or heavily fissured marble, crack and reinforcement checks deserve more. For a relatively sound marble, those risks are lower, and specification, finish, usable dimensions, and visual selection matter more.

The purpose of the inspection is not to prove that every natural feature has disappeared. It is to collect enough evidence to decide whether the actual shipment should be accepted, reworked, replaced, adjusted, held, or released for packing and shipment.

One timing note before the detail: this inspection has to happen before crating. Once slabs are bundled and crated, every correction means uncrating, and the cost of fixing a problem rises faster than the cost of finding it.

1. Verify the Actual Slabs Before Inspecting Their Quality

Before checking cracks, thickness, polish, or colour, answer a simpler question.

Are these actually the slabs you approved?

Slabs do get replaced. A selected slab may break during handling, fail at the polishing line, or turn out to be unusable once the full face is exposed. Replacement is a normal part of production, not evidence that a supplier is careless.

The risk is not replacement itself. The risk is losing traceability between the slabs originally approved and the slabs actually entering the shipment.

What to look for is therefore narrower than "did anything change":

  • a mismatch nobody can explain;
  • a replacement with no record of when it happened or why;
  • a replacement entering the shipment without being shown to you and reconfirmed;
  • slab or block numbers that stop matching somewhere between selection and packing.

Pre-shipment inspection should begin with traceability:

  • approved slab or batch photographs;
  • slab or block numbers where applicable;
  • current full-slab photographs;
  • quantity;
  • finish and thickness;
  • bundle or shipment identification.

You should be able to connect the material originally approved with the material now waiting to ship. Inspection records are most useful when lot or slab identification carries through the inspection report, packing list, and shipment documents, rather than disappearing after slab selection.

For repeat orders from a supplier with a long and consistent record, this risk normally drops, and inspection intensity does not need to stay identical forever.

The useful question is not whether the slab looks good. It is whether anyone can show that this is the material allocated to this order. If an approved slab has been replaced because of breakage or another production problem, the replacement should be shown and reconfirmed rather than entering the shipment silently.

2. Inspect the Risks That Matter for This Marble

A generic checklist tells buyers to inspect every marble for cracks, fissures, resin, mesh, chips, colour variation, thickness, and polish with equal attention.

Natural stone does not work that way.

The Natural Stone Institute classifies marble by soundness because different materials have very different working characteristics. Group A marbles are relatively sound and normally contain no obvious geological voids or fissures. Group C materials may contain holes, separation lines, or structural flaws, and commonly require resin, filling, reinforcement, or backing during processing.

That difference should change the inspection strategy.

For a sound material such as Thassos White, commonly classified as Soundness Group A, natural fissuring is a much lower inspection priority than it would be for a marble that routinely needs reinforcement.

This does not mean a sound marble cannot crack. Cracks can be introduced during cutting, handling, storage, or transport. What changes is how much inspection effort that risk deserves.

At the other end of the range, if a material is known to contain weak veins, natural separation, resin-filled areas, or mesh reinforcement, crack and repair inspection deserves considerably more attention.

The Same Logic Applies to How Slabs Are Handled

For most structurally sound slab orders, and where conditions allow it to be done safely, our normal practice is to separate slabs with trained yard staff and appropriate lifting equipment, so the complete face of each slab can be seen rather than showing the buyer only the first slab in a bundle.

We do not treat this as an absolute rule.

If the marble is fissured, fragile, or reinforced, and repeated handling itself raises the chance of breakage, the inspection method should change. The more conservative approach is to keep slabs supported unless a problem is visible or the buyer specifically requires individual opening. Natural Stone Institute safety guidance stresses that slab condition, fissures, cracks, thickness, and reinforcement must be assessed before lifting.

The principle:

Do not damage a fragile slab just to prove that you inspected it.

Inspection method follows material risk. It is not a mechanical requirement to lift every slab in every order.

3. Check the Confirmed Specification and the Actual Usable Area

Once material identity is confirmed, inspect the shipment against the specification that was actually agreed. That normally covers:

  • slab dimensions;
  • thickness;
  • surface finish;
  • flatness where relevant;
  • quantity;
  • any project-specific requirement stated in the PI, PO, drawing, or approval record.

The question is not whether the slab meets a vague definition of good quality. It is whether the finished order matches the confirmed requirement.

Production equipment can reduce process variation, but final QC still depends on measurement evidence from the actual shipment.

So ask whether dimensions, thickness, and flatness were measured and recorded before shipment, not simply eyeballed by whoever was on the floor that day. Measurements taken on the slabs in front of you are the evidence. Everything else is an expectation.

Do Not Confuse Gross Slab Size With Usable Slab Size

For slab buyers, one measurement question usually matters more than a small difference in overall length:

How much of the invoiced slab can actually be used?

EN 13373 distinguishes gross from net dimensions for rough natural-stone slabs. Gross dimensions describe the rectangle enclosing the slab. Net dimensions are based on the largest rectangle that actually fits within it. That is a measurement concept, not an automatic pricing rule for finished slabs.

The commercial measurement basis still has to be agreed between buyer and supplier. But the underlying procurement issue is simple. A slab may measure 2,800 × 1,700 mm at its maximum extremities and still contain:

  • an unusable broken corner;
  • an irregular edge;
  • a severely damaged portion;
  • a defect that must be removed before fabrication.

That unusable portion should not quietly be treated as usable project area. In our slab measurement practice, areas that clearly cannot be used are deducted when determining the effective slab area for the order.

So do not only ask whether the slab is 2,800 mm long. Ask how much of the area you are paying for can actually be fabricated.

4. Judge Repairs by the Result, Not by Whether a Repair Exists

One of the least useful inspection rules is: if you see resin, filling, or repair, reject the slab.

That is not how many natural marbles are commercially processed.

The Natural Stone Institute's soundness classification explicitly recognises filling, sticking, resin treatment, reinforcing backing, and other repairs as normal processing practice for certain marble groups. Group C marble in particular may require these treatments to produce stone suitable for architectural use. NSI guidance also recognises that cracks in stones of lower soundness may sometimes be repaired with epoxy or polyester resin, and that replacement becomes appropriate where a repair cannot be made successfully.

So a repaired marble slab is not automatically a defective marble slab. The real question is whether the repair produces an acceptable finished result.

This applies to resin-filled fissures, filled pores or voids, repaired chips, repaired edges, local colour filling, reinforced weak areas, and some repaired cracks in materials where such treatment is technically appropriate.

A repair passes when the repaired area is stable, the surface is properly finished, the colour relationship is reasonable, and the repair does not remain objectionable under the normal viewing condition of the intended project.

Two things can go wrong, and they are not the same problem:

  • The stone is usable but the repair is visually poor. Filler colour is obvious, polish is inconsistent, or an edge repair needs refinishing. This is a finishing failure, and it is correctable.
  • The repaired area remains structurally questionable. A crack continues through a critical usable area, or the damaged portion has to come out of the slab's usable dimensions. This is a material failure, and refinishing will not solve it.

These are two different failures and should not lead to the same disposition.

There is also no useful universal rule such as "a repair visible from exactly one metre must fail." Viewing distance, lighting, finish, application, stone type, and buyer expectation differ too much. The acceptance condition should be defined around the actual project rather than invented during the final inspection.

For buyers, the useful inspection question is not whether this slab has ever been repaired. It is whether the repaired slab still satisfies the visual, structural, and fabrication requirements of this project.

5. Check the Whole Slab Lot Visually

A shipment can contain slabs that are individually acceptable but visually inconsistent as a group.

For slab orders, this is different from a formal dry lay. Dry laying is more relevant to fabricated tiles, wall panels, stairs, and cut-to-size project pieces, where the factory is simulating the final installation layout.

For raw or finished slabs, the pre-shipment task is simpler:

Does the complete slab lot still fall within the visual range the buyer approved?

Check the slabs as a lot for:

  • background tone;
  • warm or cool colour shift;
  • vein density;
  • vein character;
  • obvious outlier slabs;
  • block-to-block difference;
  • sequence where consecutive slabs matter;
  • bookmatch order where applicable.

This is one reason full-slab inspection is more useful than a few attractive close-up photographs. Subject to the handling limits in section 2, the buyer should understand the actual visual range of the lot before it disappears into bundles.

Natural marble is expected to vary, and variation alone is not a defect.

But natural variation should not be used as an unlimited excuse either. If one or two slabs fall clearly outside the approved range, the supplier should identify them rather than hiding them in the middle of the shipment and arguing later that all natural stone varies.

Selection is a comparison against the material and range that were agreed, not against an imaginary universal definition of first quality.

6. Require Enough Evidence to Make a Shipment-Release Decision

A pre-shipment inspection is not complete because someone says QC passed. You need enough evidence to understand what was inspected and what happened to any exception.

For a marble slab order, a useful evidence package can include:

  • full-face photographs or video of the actual slabs;
  • slab, block, batch, or order identification;
  • thickness and dimensional measurements;
  • photos of important repairs or defects;
  • finish inspection evidence;
  • whole-lot visual comparison;
  • actual quantity;
  • usable-dimension or area adjustments where relevant;
  • records of any replacement slab;
  • final status of every significant non-conformity.

The last item is the one most often missing. A report that lists findings without saying what happened to them is a record of looking, not a record of deciding.

Who Should Perform the Inspection?

Inspection independence should scale with risk. First orders, difficult materials, high-value shipments, or weak traceability justify your own representative, a third-party inspector, or more detailed remote inspection evidence. Routine repeat orders from a supplier with proven slab-level control can rely more heavily on documented factory QC.

What Happens When Something Fails?

Finding a problem is half of QC. Every significant finding should end in a disposition:

Disposition When It Applies
Accept The condition falls within the confirmed requirement.
Rework The slab can be repolished, refilled, trimmed, or otherwise corrected.
Replace Another suitable slab must be allocated and shown to the buyer.
Deduct A clearly unusable portion comes out of the effective dimensions or area, where that is the agreed commercial measurement basis.
Hold Packing or shipment stops until the issue is resolved.
Reinspect Corrected or replacement material is checked again.

Only then does the order move to shipment release, packing, and loading.

Packing and container loading are their own inspection, with their own failure modes, and they come after everything above. This article stops at release.

That is the purpose of pre-shipment inspection. Not to produce the largest possible checklist, but to identify the risks that actually matter for that stone and that supplier, compare the real shipment with what was approved, and give you enough evidence to make a commercial decision while correction is still cheap.
